WeGo Full Steam Ahead

WeGo Full Steam Ahead

Here to Revitalize Public Spaces, Celebrate Local Artists & Diversity, Honor Railroad History, and Educate & Engage.

WeGo Full Steam Ahead is a public art initiative that will place artistically painted train sculptures throughout our West Chicago community, celebrating local history, creativity, and civic pride. This project is a collaboration between People Made Visible, the West Chicago Public Library District, the West Chicago City Museum, and the West Chicago Parks Foundation, in collaboration with WeGo Together for Kids and the City of West Chicago, bringing together a dynamic mix of art, education, history, and public space revitalization. As we approach the 250th anniversary of the United States (America 250), this program will serve as a bold tribute to our community’s deep connection to the railroads, while fostering cultural engagement, excitement, and revitalization.

Program Goals & Community Benefits

Revitalization Through Art

By installing fiberglass train sculptures, each uniquely decorated by an artist, in key public locations, we will transform West Chicago into an outdoor art gallery, drawing visitors and residents to explore our community. Public art encourages foot traffic, supports local businesses, and reinvigorates shared spaces.

Showcasing Local Artists & Cultural Diversity

West Chicago’s diversity is one of its greatest strengths. Each train sculpture will be uniquely painted by area artists from varied cultural backgrounds, showcasing both talent and heritage through personal, creative interpretations.

Celebrating Our Railroad Heritage

We proudly honor our past as the first Illinois community created by the western expansion of the railroads out of Chicago. Each sculpture will include a QR code linking to digital storytelling content hosted by the West Chicago City Museum, creating a layered experience of art and history. Trains speak to many demographics, including children who are fascinated by the size and operation of trains.

Engaging the Community

The project includes artist talks, guided walking tours, educational museum and library programming, and youth outreach via partners like WeGo Together for Kids. Community members of all ages will help bring "WeGo Full Steam Ahead" to life.
